Classes

The Yellowknife Guild of Arts and Crafts is offering a number of different classes and workshops in the winter and spring of 2017.  Registration for all classes is on Thursday January 12th at 7 p.m. Registration is first come, first served and in-person only. Both cash and cheque payments are accepted.

Pottery Classes

Session 1

BEGINNER HANDBUILDING
Learn about the properties of clay while having fun and making unique items! This class provides a good introduction to the behavior and tendencies of clay and how to manipulate it.

MONDAYS, January 16-February 20, 7:00-9:30pm
[6 WEEKS] Instructor: Rachel Makohoniuk and Jenny Tucker
Class Fees: $150 + $25 Clay. Guild Membership fee $30 additional for new members (Includes use of open studio for the duration of the course)

LEVEL 1 – INTRODUCTORY WHEEL COURSE

Learn the basics of wheel thrown pottery; wedging, centering, throwing simple shapes, trimming, firing and glazing.

TUESDAYS, January 17-March 7, 7:00-9:30pm

[8 WEEKS] Instructor: John Argue

Class Fees: $200 + $35 Clay. Guild Membership fee $30 additional for new members

(Includes use of open studio for the duration of the course)

LEVEL 1 – INTRODUCTORY WHEEL COURSE

Learn the basics of wheel thrown pottery; wedging, centering, throwing simple shapes, trimming, firing and glazing.

WEDNESDAYS, January 18-March 8, 7:00-9:30pm

[8 WEEKS] Instructor: Garry Singer and Amy Ganton

Class Fees: $200 + $35 Clay. Guild Membership fee $30 additional for new members

Session 2

LEVEL 2 – HANDBUILDING

This class will go beyond the basics to teach you how to create more complex hand built items.     

     MONDAYS, April 3-May 15 (no class April 17),  7:00-9:30pm

Prerequisite –  Level 1 Hand building at Yellowknife Guild of Arts and Crafts or proof of previous experience.

TUESDAYS, April 4-May 9, 7:00-9:30pm

[6 WEEKS] Instructor: Ann Peters

Class Fees: $150 + $35 Clay. Guild Membership fee $30 additional

LEVEL 2 – BEYOND THE BASICS WHEEL COURSE

This class will go beyond the basics to teach you how to center larger amounts of clay and to refine knowledge learned in beginner wheel class.

         WEDNESDAYS , APRIL 5-MAY 26 7:00-9:30pm

[8 WEEKS] Instructor: Wendy Stephenson and Corinne Dziuba

Class Fees: $200 + the cost of clay purchased individually

Guild Membership fee $30 additional

(Includes use of open studio for the duration of the course)

Prerequisite: Completed Level 1 Introductory to Wheel course at The Yellowknife Guild of Arts and Crafts (or proof of other previous experience)

PARENT AND CHILD HANDBUILDING

Parent and child (5-10) will learn how to manipulate clay while making fun projects together. Students will learn the basics of forming and joining clay. All pieces will be glazed.

SUNDAYS, APRIL 2nd, 9th, and 23rd 10am-12pm

[3 Classes] Instructor: Alana Kronstal and Michelle Fortin

Class Fees: $60 (2nd child +$30) Guild Membership fee $10(child) $30(adult) additional          for new members

Stained Glass Open Studio
Mondays 7:00-9:30 p.m. (beginning January 16)

For anyone who has already completed a beginners course.

Open studio sessions cost $5.00 per session.  Current Guild membership of $30.00 is required for participation in open studios.

Tools are provided.

Bird Carving Open Studio
Tuesday 7:00-9:30 p.m. (begins January 17)

For anyone who has completed a beginning Bird Carving course and would like to refine their skills

Open studio sessions cost $5.00 per session. Current Guild membership of $30.00 is required for participation in open studios.

Tools are provided.

 

Beginners Stained Glass class (Tiffany method)
Wednesdays 7:00-9:30 p.m. (January 25-March 15)

This fun and challenging program introduces you to the textures and colours of stained glass, glass working tools and patterns. You will learn skills like glass scoring, breaking, grinding, copper foiling, soldering and finishing. You will choose from one of the patterns provided for your first project to create a Sun Catcher using the Tiffany (copper foil) method. The course consists of eight classes.  After you have completed the Sun Catcher you may choose from the great variety of patterns available to put your new skills to work and create a second project of your choosing. Templates made from the patterns are yours to keep. Glass and consumables for your projects are included in your material fee of $50.00. Class fee is $200

 

Beginners Lead Came class.
Wednesdays 7:00-9:30 (April 5-May 10)

Learn how to build stained glass in the traditional way. In this course you will learn how to score and break the glass, grind, lead, solder and cement your panel.
You will choose from designs and glass provided to build your own 10″ X 15″ panel to display in the window.Costs include: $30 guild membership + $50 material fee +  $120 instructional fee. Maximum of 6 students.

Thursday– Sit & Knit Open Studio.
Begins January 19 from 7:00-9:30

Fibre / Knitting Open Studio sessions will be held on Thursday evenings. Sessions operate on a drop-in basis at a cost of $5.00 per session. Current Guild membership of $30.00 is required for participation in open studios.

Fibre / Knitting open studios provide an opportunity for fibre artists to work independently in a friendly social atmosphere. Each session is hosted by an experienced fibre artist who is available to attempt to answer questions or help troubleshoot ongoing projects. We have fibre artists who can assist with knitting, crocheting, weaving, basketry and felting. The open studios are not classes so actual instruction is not provided. Participants must bring their own projects and provide their own materials.

  • CLASSES ARE OPEN TO GUILD MEMBERS ONLY. MEMBERSHIP FEE ($30 FOR ADULTS, $10 FOR KIDS) PAYABLE ANNUALLY. MEMBERSHIP YEAR RUNS FROM APRIL 1 to MARCH 31 EACH YEAR.
  • PAYMENT IN FULL MUST BE MADE AT THE TIME OF REGISTRATION. YOU MAY PAY BY CASH OR CHEQUE ONLY. GUILD CLASSES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE UNLESS CANCELLED.
  • PARTICIPANTS ARE NOT REGISTERED UNTIL FEES ARE PAID.
  • CLASSES ARE FILLED ON A FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED BASIS BUT WILL ONLY RUN WITH SUFFICIENT REGISTRATION. NORMALLY THIS REQUIRES 6 PAID STUDENTS. YOU MAY REGISTER FOR CLASSES UNTIL THE CLASS STARTS.
